The Model Minority Myth: How Anti-Asian Racism Persists in Tech

In the past year, hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders increased nearly 150% across the U.S.; Former President Trump and other Americans used racist and discriminatory rhetoric to blame the AAPI community for the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent spike in unprovoked acts of anti-Asian violence sheds light on the structural and persistent racism that members of the AAPI community experience in their jobs, lives, and neighborhoods.

This violent anti-Asian racism isn’t new, but as a society, we have largely ignored and stayed silent about racism against Asian American and Pacific Islanders. Much of that silence has been rooted in the destructive and divisive Model Minority Myth, which is deeply embedded in the tech industry. Panelists include:

  • Timmy Lu, Executive Director of AAPIs for Civic Empowerment & AAPIs for Civic Empowerment Education Fund
  • Alexander Cho, Ph.D. and Assistant Professor for the Department of Asian American Studies at University of California, Santa Barbara
  • Ivy Teng Lei, Head of Growth at Exygy
