In recent years, tech workers have rapidly strengthened their organizing power to make their voices heard at some of the world’s most powerful companies, pushing companies to abide by a stronger code of ethical behavior. In 2018 thousands of Google employees participated in a worldwide walkout, in 2019 Palantir employees protested their company’s contract with ICE, and this past year thousands of tech workers held their employers accountable to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Now in 2021, shortly after Kickstarter’s employees brought labor organizing to tech’s front door, Google employees announced that they have formed a union in order to “have a meaningful say in decisions that affect us and the societies we live in”. 

On Thursday February 11th, from 12-1pm, we had a conversation on the role of labor organizing and unions within the tech workforce and the implications of this new form of organizing on the tech industry and the labor movement nationwide. The conversation was moderated by Samantha Gordon, Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Organizing. Panelists included:

  • Chris Benner, Director at the Santa Cruz Institute for Social Transformation
  • Chewy Shaw, Vice Chair of the Alphabet Workers Union
