Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications

A newly created role, the Senior Vice President for Marketing and Communications (SVP) is responsible for expanding brand awareness, media coverage, and influence in support of our efforts to ensure that all Californians have access to economic mobility, housing, and equitable employment opportunities. 

This role will include developing and implementing integrated communications strategies, plans, and campaigns calibrated to achieve short and long-term objectives. The SVP will be expected to contribute to thought leadership on communications strategies, including crafting materials, press releases, fact sheets, presentations, and contributed content such as op-eds, bylines, and blog posts; and contributing to thought leadership for coalitions and campaigns in whichTechEquity participates. The SVP will be expected to cultivate strong relationships with media and other influencers; actively pitching stories and generating coverage.

Reporting to the COO, the SVP will play a key role on the senior leadership team, contributing to overall organizational health, growth, and strategy. Initially, the SVP will manage a team that includes the Director of Content and a to-be-hired Marketing Manager. Team expansion is planned in line with organizational growth in 2021-23. The SVP has the opportunity to help build this team, and develop the strategies, people, and tools to effectively achieve our organizational goals.

This senior-level role is ideal for someone with the following traits:

  • 8-12+ years of experience in marketing, communications, and/or PR or agency experience 
  • Experience managing teams in mission-driven settings
  • High level of comfort engaging with the tech community, media, and influencers 
  • Interest and experience in housing policy and/or workforce and labor policy
  • Ability to be based in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area; currently a fully remote role, post-COVID will require monthly trips to Oakland/SF and ~20% travel around the Bay Area

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Owns strategy development and execution for our communications and marketing  function
  • Manages, coaches, and grows a team to execute on that strategy 
  • Develops our digital acquisition model, including market research, testing, and iteration of different approaches for reaching a larger audience and driving that audience to our ladder of engagement.
  • Responsible for helping to shape and build consistency in organizational outreach across all areas of the organization.
  • Works with SVP of Advocacy and Organizing in implementing an expanded ladder of engagement, allowing our member base to support our campaigns. 
  • Works closely with the Director of Content to increase our reach across web and social media platforms to drive conversation linked to our ladder of engagement, including but not limited to events, coalition building, and volunteering opportunities.
  • Contributes to the senior leadership team to ensure our marketing and communications strategies are delivering on org-wide goals.
  • Scopes out opportunities to expand our geographic reach beyond the central Bay Area, including contributing communications strategies to our engagement plans for the Bay Area, Southern California, and TBD national geographies.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Deep and complex understanding of organic and paid marketing, funnel management from top to bottom, community building, and the ability to contribute to the organization’s strategy, credibility, and thought leadership
  • Strong networking skills and ability to engage a relevant community of aligned individuals and organizations on behalf of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with peers in shared efforts; ideally brings experience managing marketing campaigns, digital media, multi-organization collaboratives, or public relations
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills; able to present ideas in an organized and compelling manner 
  • Strong commitment to our equity goals
  • A high level of comfort and experience interacting with members of the tech community
  • Experience supervising a growing team and providing coaching and learning opportunities to junior staff; committed to building transparent, safe, and fun organizational culture

This is a competitive salaried position with medical/dental/vision/retirement benefits. We value work/life balance and offer unlimited time off and flexible work hours. Occasional evening and weekend work is required. 

The salary range for this position is in line with our organizational payscale: $125k -$140k.
