Expand Protections for Renters Now with AB 15 & 16

The pandemic has fast tracked the urgency to further protect renters and provide financial relief.

Just 2 years ago, TechEquity co-sponsored the Tenant Protection Act of 2019, which created common sense safeguards for more renters than any other renters rights bill in US history. However, the coronavirus pandemic has brought about  even more challenges for renters statewide, placing renters at higher risk of evictions. We need to enact new protections now that are tailored to the pandemic so that our most vulnerable community members don’t fall through the cracks.

In 2021 California legislators will introduce two bills that will help further strengthen renter protections in the midst of the pandemic. AB 15 will minimize the impending eviction and homelessness crisis by creating critical housing protections like extending the deadline to pay any debt accrued from rent. AB 16 will provide direct financial assistance to those most in need and extend the eviction moratorium. In conjunction, both of these bills have the potential to introduce new tenant protections that are reflective of the reality for struggling Californians.

While we wait for new housing production to come online that will lower the cost of housing overall, we need to enact policies that prevent renters from losing a roof over their heads.
